A native of Washington, D.C., Young received a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts from the College of Wooster and a master’s degree in library science from Columbia University’s School of Library Science. He served as a film-library specialist with the U.S. Army’s 25th Infantry Division (1968-1970) and was awarded three bronze star medals for meritorious achievement directing a Special Service Library in Chu Chi, Vietnam. Young has held numerous professional positions in national, academic, research and public libraries, and has extensive government and industry experience. He is the only Chinese American librarian to hold high-level managerial positions at two U.S. national libraries.
